Cricket: A reborn Magpies Cricket Club is making its move. A completely different side compared to the one that went winless last season, the Magpies are coming and coming fast. Winning five of its seven games so far this season, the club is entrenched in DBCT Poole Cup top-three and two games clear of Brothers in the race for a finals spot. In a 73-run win against Pioneer Valley on the weekend, recruit Alec Townsend belted 84 not out in his first knock for the club following two years out of the game, while paceman Tyron Eyles took 4-30 to register his best figures in the black and white.

TOUCH FOOTBALL: Growing up with a footy in hand, Katie Geiger was destined to take the touch football world by storm. From humble beginnings passing the Steeden with her mum and cousins to the glories of State of Origin, Ms Geiger's influence on Mackay touch has culminated in the creation of the 'Fast Four' competition. The inclusive, adrenaline-charging concept has inspired Ms Geiger to continue enhancing the format's growing reputation. "That's the beauty of touch football. You play in a mixed competition and you can play with anyone at any age and that's what I love about the sport,” Ms Geiger said. "That's where a competition like this brings that real fun enjoyment to Mackay touch.” https://www.dailymercury.com.au/news/big-benefits-from-bash-as-5600-boost-economy/3616649/

Over 5600 fanatics turned out in force to witness the Brisbane Heat cruise to victory over the Adelaide Strikers at Great Barrier Reef Arena in what was the highest standalone WBBL match turnout in the cricket competition's history. With prospective contests - including men's Big Bash pre-season fixtures, the inter-state JLT one-day competition and potential warm-up games for next year's T20 World Cup - to be played around the country, Harrup Park general manager Matt Cielens said there were many hosting opportunities for the region. https://www.dailymercury.com.au/news/cowboys-recruits-in-the-eye-of-the-storm/3661021/

A talented line-up will be on show, pitting Michael Morgan and Coen Hess against Queensland State of Origin teammates Cameron Smith and Cameron Munster. Jordan Kahu, Josh McGuire and Nene Macdonald will also pull on a Cowboys jersey for the first time in a side that is likely to reflect their best 17 for round one. Cowboys coach Paul Green said it was important for his new troops to gain match fitness ahead of the season, with all three set to play integral roles in their pursuit of the 2019 title. https://www.dailymercury.com.au/news/dynamic-partnership-ready-to-take-on-the-world/3655136/
TOUCH FOOTBALL: Honoured and surprised, the Geiger clan is ready to take on the world. Talented duo Katie and Matt Geiger will pull on the green and gold for Australia at the 2019 World Cup in Malaysia this April, in what will be the former's first foray on the international stage. Katie will represent the 35 years women's side, while husband Matt will duke it out with the best over-35 men. "It was an honour to make the top 30, there's a lot of talented girls I've played against for years,” she said. https://www.dailymercury.com.au/news/legacy-lives-on-in-annual-memorial-shield-game/3656174/
RUGBY LEAGUE: The lasting legacy of a Brothers club legend was honoured at the weekend, with the third annual Peter Keogh Memorial Shield contest adding extra incentive to a pre-season league clash. Peter Keogh's wife Judy and their family were among the hundreds of spectators at the games on Saturday. Eddie Keogh, who travelled with his family from the Gold Coast, said it was an "honour” to have his father's legacy cherished by the wider community. "This is the third year running we've come up as a family, my boys Slater and Dusty have a run with the juniors here,” Keogh said. "There's no bigger honour than having this shield for Dad, and to think this will just go on and on for decades is amazing.” Brothers and Wanderers fought it out in the junior division, while Brothers' senior side came up against Magpies. |
