From humble beginnings passing the Steeden with her mum and cousins to the glories of State of Origin, Ms Geiger's influence on Mackay touch has culminated in the creation of the 'Fast Four' competition. The inclusive, adrenaline-charging concept has inspired Ms Geiger to continue enhancing the format's growing reputation. "That's the beauty of touch football. You play in a mixed competition and you can play with anyone at any age and that's what I love about the sport,” Ms Geiger said. "That's where a competition like this brings that real fun enjoyment to Mackay touch.” The four-a-side, shortened format creates opportunities for players to show-off their speed and ability, and the competition is expected to feature a flurry of tries and exciting passages of play not often seen in it's rival football codes.
This is the second year that the competition has run and it's growth has illustrated the passion for the sport the community has. Last year 16 teams competed in the event, and that number has increased to 24 for the upcoming event. Representatives from North Queensland Touch will also be in attendance as interest for the format grows - so much so that prospective sponsors have been unable to get on board for this year's showcase. "We had teams lining up basically. In all we probably had about 28 teams looking to get in so that's a really big positive,” Ms Geiger said. "We actually have two sponsors who couldn't get in to this competition...so they put their hands up and have already let us know that they want in on the next one. That's a really big positive sign that what we gave back to the sponsors in the first Fast Four they felt it was really worth it.” Stars of Mackay touch, headlined by 16-year-old Shameus Edwards fresh off his Player of the Final accolades at the Under 18's World Cup, will ignite the field in the Saturday, and Ms Geiger is excited by the quality they will bring. "He's absolutely amazing to watch, a very skilful player. Him and Mitchell Pitt have a team together, and those two combining on the field I think will be absolute magic.” "We've got Australia representatives and Queensland representatives playing in this competitive division, so to see them in some open space, with the balls they can throw and the quickness of their feet, I think it's just going to be a wonderful spectacle.” The competition will kick off at 3.30pm this Saturday at the Mackay Touch Football fields. Music will be ringing out as the games are played, while sprint races and 'flick-passing' competitions will keep onlookers entertained, involved and in the running for cash prizes.
