Peter Keogh's wife Judy and their family were among the hundreds of spectators at the games on Saturday. Eddie Keogh, who travelled with his family from the Gold Coast, said it was an "honour” to have his father's legacy cherished by the wider community. "This is the third year running we've come up as a family, my boys Slater and Dusty have a run with the juniors here,” Keogh said. "There's no bigger honour than having this shield for Dad, and to think this will just go on and on for decades is amazing.” Brothers and Wanderers fought it out in the junior division, while Brothers' senior side came up against Magpies. Junior fixtures kick-started the event, which ended with Wanderers taking out the shield after claiming wins in the Under 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s.
Brothers Juniors club president Andrew Battaia applauded the event's success, and said the bond forged between the two clubs was special for them to share. "We had Peter Keogh's grandson play for Brothers ... they're a big Brothers family,” Battaia said. "The thing with the two clubs is the majority of kids go to school together ... so there's a lot of rivalry at school to build it up.” Against Magpies, Brothers senior players turned in a top A-Grade performance, steaming to a 46-16 win on the back of a Man of the Match performance by Jarred McGuire. It followed a dramatic reserve grade contest, which resulted in a 20-18 win for Brothers. Despite a Magpies try in the final minute, a missed conversion sealed the result. Joshua Borg earned the Jim Lucas Player of the Match honours. Peter Keogh's daughter Laura Lucas praised the efforts of the volunteers who made the day possible. She said her father was well remembered by the dedicated community. "He was a legend, I think I'm allowed to say that because he's my dad, he would just be proud as punch,” Lucas said. "He wouldn't want the accolades or say a speech, but this is what he would want.”
