The better the team gels in rugby league the greater the results. With the North Queensland Cowboys side brimming with new combinations, it was always going to take time for those relationships to build on the field. But as coronavirus reared its ugly head, the chance to sync in game situations was taken away. In spite of that, Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt believes the unity in the group will shine through when the NRL returns on May 28. The 28-year-old was two games into his fresh combination with recruit Esan Marsters, who was brought in from Wests Tigers to strengthen the centres. A sign of a strong centre-wing pairing is their ability to communicate and defend well together, and Feldt said there were promising indicators in the infancy of their partnership. “We started the year really well – I think we only let in one try which is something we really wanted to work on,” he said.
“At the start the talk was a little down, Esan isn’t a big talker on or off the field. But after the first few trainings it was really good, he started to talk a lot more and I got comfortable. “It showed in the first games we work well together and he brings a lot to the team. “Unfortunately with the COVID stuff coming around we had to put it on the backburner. But once we get into the swing of things we’ll be fine.” Motivation has been the core ingredient to Feldt prospering with his training within COVID-19 restrictions. But something has been missing — the bond forged in a team environment. Often inspiration to go the extra mile comes from the influence of fellow squad members, according to Feldt. While he has continued to diligently work as per the programs handing out by Cowboys coaching staff, the imminent return return to training for NRL clubs could not come fast enough. “That’s the hardest part being a rugby league player is not being around your mates … you build really good connections with them,” Feldt said. “You’re with them every day of the week then all of a sudden we’re away from them. “When you’ve got your teammates around you they bring the energy and motivation everyone wants. “It’s a lot easier when they’re around, when you’re feeling low and down they come around and bring the morale up.”
