He is back, fit, firing and ready to state his case as an NRL regular. The adaptable 23-year-old has already gone through the highs and lows of professional football in his fledgling career. He has the Perth Nines title to his credit but it only came after overcoming a dislocated shoulder sustained in round 13 against the Manly Sea Eagles.
But Dunn took the disappointment in his stride, and with games under his belt in the pre-season is not giving it a second thought. “I was just starting to find my feet and really enjoy the year, so it was disappointing to get hurt again,” he said. “I’m not the first person for it to happen to, it’s part of rugby league and the rollercoaster – you have to take the lows with the highs. “You just get back into rehab, find little things to look forward to like dates and look forward to that.” Dunn sees his versatility as a focal point of his game and something he believes could make him a point of difference in the Cowboys side. Last season he filled in an centre and, prior to the Perth Nines, teammate Coen Hess talked up the 23-year-olds offload ability. With some more consistent game time at the top level under his belt, Dunn believes his innovative attacking game could be his ticket to becoming an NRL regular. But as he tussles with several fellow young forwards such as Shane Wright and Tom Gilbert for a jersey he knows he needs to make every opportunity count. “That’s kind of my skillset and my way to get into the team: use the ball and be a bit more skilful,” Dunn said. “Being able to play in a few different positions might warrant ‘Greeny’ to have a look at that but whatever happens happens. “It’s a very competitive group because there’s so many young lads. “We’ve also got our older forwards who are all very experienced test players, so it’s a really good mix … it makes the training a really high standard.”
