REALITY has not sunk in yet. For the first time since he was four, Kyle Laybutt is starring down the barrel of a year without rugby league. It is a bitter pill to swallow after the Intrust Super Cup was cancelled for the year amid the coronavirus pandemic. But now is not the time to dwell on that. For the Blackhawks five-eighth it is the time for his team to show what they’re made of. Following the closure of the club for the foreseeable future, the onus is now on the playing group to keep fit and healthy. And whoever used this time most effectively, Laybutt said, would prove it with the results on the field.

TOWNSVILLE Blackhawks staff have been stood down due to the coronavirus pandemic. But with an eye on the future the club are steadfast they will be back. The suspension of all NRL and QRL competitions, as well as the closure of club affiliated leagues clubs, have led to the widespread standing down of team support staff across sporting codes. Blackhawks football operations manager Adrian Thomson was among those who will have annual leave paid out before the next steps are taken. But he was adamant he and other football staff would be at the ready to return as soon as they were able to do so. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/nrl/cowboys/the-pregame-speech-that-gave-an-origin-legend-goosebumps/news-story/609a02dd33305d27dec3c36f924fafb4
HISTORY beckoned for Jenni-Sue Hoepper as she prepared to lead the North Queensland Gold Stars out for the first QRLW clash. Despite what she had achieved in rugby league already, the moment gave her goosebumps. It was an impassioned pre-game speech from former Jillaroo Deanna Turner that started the chills. It illustrated to Hoepper that she was not just playing for the Gold Stars but all of North Queensland. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/the-desire-that-pushed-blackhawks-hooker-josh-chudleigh-through-his-injury-hell/news-story/ccfecc55abfa7bc8208f97295259fc06
JOSH Chudleigh holds vivid memories of his one NRL game. Those memories are a trigger, a catalyst that reminds him he can succeed at that level and has what it takes to get back there. The Blackhawks’ hooker laced up for the Cowboys in 2016, scoring a try against the Canberra Raiders. Since then it has been a tumultuous time on the injury front. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/the-vendetta-new-townsville-blackhawks-captain-jaelen-feeney-holds-against-the-ipswich-jets/news-story/8f33dc8f2cd9d08ea4b1646ec74af22d
WHEN asked how he feels about the Ipswich Jets, Jaelen Feeney grimaces. The Blackhawks five-eighth has bitter memories about the southeast Queensland club and it has developed into something of a vendetta. All that has done is fuel the new Townsville captain to make an impact when they begin their Intrust Super Cup campaign. Feeney will fill the shoes of club skipper Sam Hoare as the former Cowboy continues his comeback from an ACL injury. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/labourer-physio-captain-jack-johnson-is-a-balancing-expert/news-story/0341fed0198b715d609ae0305f8aba73
JACK Johnson is becoming well rehearsed in his juggling act. By day he ferries off the coast to work as a labourer and returns to his studies in physiotherapy. But he has little time to recuperate — once those tasks are complete he gets stuck into training with the Townsville Blackhawks’ under-20s side. Now his expertise in balance will be tested on the field upon being named his side’s 2020 captain. By his own admission, Johnson is not much of a talker. He will say “what he has to say” when it has to be said but ultimately it will be his actions that lead his charges on the field. |
