http://premier.qld.cricket.com.au/pageitem.aspx?id=151071&id2=1&eID=12832&entityID=12832 What could be better than a jam-packed weekend of cricket? The availability of some of the nation’s finest female cricketers graced the Katherine Raymont Shield, with four matches of the Twenty20 competition scheduled over the opening weekend of December. The series of matches between Western Suburbs, Sandgate-Redcliffe, Valley, the University of Queensland and the Gold Coast produced plenty of highlights and entertainment, before the heavens opened to wash out the final fixture of the weekend showcase. Game 1 - Lights Out for University as Sandgate-Redcliffe Cruise Home A tirade of run-outs saw the University of Queensland slump to a nine-wicket defeat at the hands of Sandgate-Redcliffe; featuring the representation of England international and Heat-turned- Hurricane, Lauren Winfield.
Four of University’s batters were undone short of the crease, with some gun fielding from Sandgate’s Jemma Barsby keeping the field alive and the incoming batters wary. As wickets fell in rapid fashion, it appeared Uni’s only chance of salvaging a result was the lighting, with an extended delay stepping in to halt play as a technological mishap darkened the contest at Chelmer Sports Ground. However upon resumption, Sandgate continued the onslaught, reducing their opponents to a bleak total of 39, as Courtney Hill and Georgia Prestwidge chipped in with two wickets a piece. Despite claiming the wicket of Winfield for 16, the carnage had been complete, as Sandgate cruised to the resounding triumph in the sixth over. Game 2 - Ferling Rips Through in Tight Win Over Gold Coast An inspired bowling performance — spearheaded by Southern Star, Holly Ferling — has guided Western Suburbs to a 15-run win over the Gold Coast on Saturday night. Chasing 110 for victory, only Brisbane Heat WBBL star, Sammy-Jo Johnson was able to provide a rear-guard resistance; as Ferling, Kyra Black and Isobel Hartog played vital hands in restricting their opponents in what transpired as a tight contest. Johnson’s 41 off 33 deliveries at the top of the innings — striking five boundaries, including two maximums — had the Gold Coast on track in the early stages of their pursuit. However the lack of support throughout the batting order, as well as Johnson’s dismissal at the hands of Heat teammate, Ferling, hindered the initial promise of the innings as the middle order was torn apart by the exciting trio. Earlier, dominate performances with the willow from Brisbane WBBL batter Kirby Short, and 18 year-old South Africa opener Laura Wolvaardt, laid the foundations for what proved to be a victorious total. Game 3 - Former Fire Stalwart Leads Valleys Home A brilliant, unbeaten 88 from former Queensland Fire member, Megan White, has led Valleys to a dominate 67-run win over University. In what transpired as the final match of the weekend — as rain abandoned the remaining clash between Valleys and Wests — White maintained an aggressive approach throughout her innings, as she hammered 14 four’s and a six in a dominant performance from the 37-year-old. The state stalwart — who featured in an ODI for Australia against New Zealand in 1999 — combined with Abigail Godfrey (12 off 13 balls) and skipper Leteysha Randall (30 off 25) in half century partnerships to complete the innings at 2-154, providing a strong platform for the Valleys arsenal to work with. Led by Heat quick, Kara Sutherland, they responded with aplomb. The senior member of the pace attack, Sutherland ripped the heart out of Uni’s middle-order, claiming 3-15 from her three over spell including a hat trick (footage). She received exceptional support from Emily Charman (3-16) and Christina Coulson (2-24) to unsettle the Students. A defiant 39 from Selena Tainton was the only substantial resistance to the fantastic exhibition of bowling. Tainton’s knock, highlighted by five boundaries featuring a six, gave her side reason to be optimistic of finishing the weekend with a win, however her dismissal to Sutherland triggered a dramatic collapse of 8-25 to eradicate their hopes of a comeback victory.
