http://premier.qld.cricket.com.au/pageitem.aspx?id=146600&id2=1&eID=12832&entityID=12832 It was a comprehensive return to the winners circle for Western Suburbs after the reigning First Grade Premiers cruised to a six-wicket triumph over Toombul in Round 2 of the Kookaburra First Grade Limited Overs competition. On the back of half-centuries from Chris Sabburg and Sam Truloff, Wests were dominant in the resounding win, bouncing back from their round one loss to University and kickstarting their 2017/18 campaign in style. Eclipsing their opponent’s total in the 39th over, the collective display garnered a well-deserved bonus-point for the home side, handing Toombul their second significant loss in the opening exchanges of the season. Set 206 for victory Sabburg was in destructive touch early.
Striking 12 fours and a six in his innings, the former Brisbane Heat batsman dominated the opening stand on his way to a fine 80. The aggressive 72-ball performance set the platform for the commanding result before he became a victim of his pursuit for quick runs, stumped off Jacob Wood with his century in sight at 2/123. Despite the setback Wests recovered swiftly through Truloff with the Queensland Bulls representative finding his feet early, turning the strike over with ease and finding the boundary on eight occasions. His unbeaten 64 was full of class, exemplified by a particularly elegant lofted off-drive that rocketed into the fences untouched. His final boundary - a clinical cut shot over the in-field - sealed the win in a promising exhibition of stroke play as the 24-year-old pushes for more higher honours this summer. Earlier Wests won the toss and restricted Toombul to 9-205 from their 50 overs after putting the visitors under the pump early in their innings. Doggett duo - Samuel and Brendan - each claimed an early victim to leave the visitors 2-9 as Kurt Prosper and Jack Webster were dismissed in quick succession to have them floundering under initial pressure. Solid contributions from the middle-order - led by 48 from skipper Cameron Leeder - stabilised the Toombul innings, however tight bowling from the Wests contingent kept the total from escalating. The team effort paints a promising picture for the season ahead, with several Wests players providing significant contributions to the cause. Western Suburbs 4-206 (C Sabburg 80, S Truloff 64*; J Wood 2/29) defeated Toombul 9-205 (C Leeder 48; S Doggett 3/25, B Edwards 3/41)
