http://premier.qld.cricket.com.au/pageitem.aspx?id=147997&id2=1&eID=12832&entityID=12832 In a captivating affair, Sandgate-Redcliffe and Toombul have played out a high-scoring draw in round one of the Queensland Premier Cricket two-day competition at Trevor Hohns Field. A convincing batting performance, led by a composed century from Charlie Hemphrey, guided the home side to an imposing first innings total on the first day before an inspired spell from inter-state stalwart Nathan Rimmington (5-70) looked to seal a comprehensive victory for the Gators. However Toombul’s Preston White had other ideas. Set to celebrate his 100th first grade two-day match next week the allrounder was a standout in each facet of the game, leading the Toombul attack with four wickets before his blistering 155-run counterpunch looked to change the game late on day two.
Despite his heroics - along with a defiant unbeaten 91 from Ronan McDonald - the fightback proved too little too late for a result to be forced as the visitors were punished for a slow start after Rimmington tore through the top-order. After declaring at 8/371, the host’s bowling contingent forced Toombul onto the back-foot early; reeling at 5/49 to seemingly extinguish their pursuit. Yet forced into the precarious position, White and McDonald set about rebuilding their chase of the mammoth target. Their 231-run stand threatened to produce the unlikeliest of comebacks as the pair posted their respective highest individual scores in First Grade. White was particularly destructive in his innings, his 158-ball feat highlighted by 24 boundaries including four sixes as the required target began to narrow. However when his brilliant knock was undone by Rimmington their hopes of a miraculous triumph fell with him, with McDonald then making sure Toombul batted out the day to secure a hard-fought draw. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Sandgate opening batsmen Bryce Street and Matthew Dolan punished Toombul from the outset with a fine first wicket partnership. Dolan’s dismissal for 46 did little for the hopes of their opponents as the in-form Hemphrey joined Street for a 129-run union that took the game away from their rivals. Street’s innings came to an end on 94, falling agonisingly short of what would have been a well-deserved ton however Hemphrey and the middle-order rallied to set up an intimidating score for the first day. Hemphrey was all class in his 110-run showcase, the English-born Queensland Bulls player striking 10 fours and four maximums as he looked to make a strong case for a position in the Sheffield Shield line-up this summer. Handy contributions from the likes of Zac Keune (37) and Joshua Connolly (26 not out) up’d the ante late in the day as Toombul were forced to sleep on the steep chase they faced the following week.
