http://premier.qld.cricket.com.au/pageitem.aspx?id=147035&id2=1&eID=12832&entityID=12832 A thrilling run chase has ended with Sandgate-Redcliffe claiming a hard fought 12-run victory over Northern Suburbs at Ian Healy Oval - their third straight win to kickstart the season. Despite a valiant half-century from Wally Wright, Norths ultimately paid the price for the loss of early wickets as former QLD Bulls and WA Warriors paceman Nathan Rimmington led the visitors attack. The Gators paceman turned in a fine all-round performance, notching a quick-fire 42 with the bat before his 2/36 off 9.2 overs put the brakes on Norths tantalising fightback. Set 245 for victory the hosts got off to a nightmare start.
Opening batsmen Tom Healy and Michael Dawson fell without troubling the scorers in a fast start with the ball provided by Rimmington and Duncan Allan. When Allan claimed his second - dismissing Nathan McSweeney LBW for 2 - Norths were reeling at 3/5 and facing a heavy defeat. Former Australian Test batsman Joe Burns set about rebuilding the innings, the skipper crafting out a fine 48 to give the home side a chance in the run chase. Economical bowling led to a steady procession of wickets shared amongst the Sandgate-Redcliffe contingent, forcing the home side into a trying position leading into the backend of the innings. With 89 still required from the last ten overs Wright kept the pressure on the field - desperately turning one’s into two’s and striking four boundaries including two maximums. Despite the mountain to climb the Norths batsman rode his luck in his run-a-ball innings, finding gaps between fielders as the target began to narrow. On the second ball of the final over and 13 runs from a stunning comeback the Norths’ batsman was run out attempting to keep the strike, his fighting counterpunch ending on 53. Earlier solid contributions throughout the Sandgate-Redcliffe batting lineup laid the foundation for the competitive total of 244 after being asked to bat first. While no batsman passed 50 the visitors combined for several significant partnerships before Rimmington’s late fireworks built the score into a competitive threat. A patient 38 from Charlie Hemphrey allowed the likes of Lloyd Aspin to play more freely around him with a knock of 37 from 29 deliveries, which was also well supported in the middle by Duncan Allan’s steady 34 off 49 balls. Queensland Bulls quick Cameron Gannon (2/38) restricted the top order from his end while Barry Bester was the pick of the Norths bowlers with 4/58. However the all-round efforts of Rimmington and Allan proved the difference as Sandgate-Redcliffe continued their unbeaten start to the season. Sandgate-Redcliffe 244 (N Rimmington 42, C Hemphrey 38; B Bester 4/58, C Gannon 2/38) defeated Northern Suburbs 232 (W Wright 53, J Burns 48; D Allan 2/39, N Rimmington 2/36)
