https://www.brisbaneheat.com.au/news/match-report/heat-back-in-winners-circle/2017-12-29 It was an emphatic return to the winner's circle for the Brisbane Heat, with a clinical Beth Mooney innings, and a disciplined bowling performance, defeating the Adelaide Strikers by nine wickets in the WBBL. After succumbing to comprehensive losses in their previous two outings, it was a rallying sight to see Southern Stars Mooney, Holly Ferling and Jess Jonassen — along with West Indian drawcard, Deandra Dottin — turn in quality contributions to reignite the Heats campaign heading into the new year. Set 114 runs for victory, Mooney was dominant throughout the innings, showcasing her worth as an international cricketer with some crisp batting that took the life out of the Strikers attack.
Striking 11 boundaries — featuring one powerful six over backward square-leg— Mooney compiled a brilliant unbeaten 86 off just 57 deliveries, dispatching an opposition featuring fellow national representatives Megan Schutt and Tahlia McGrath with unrelenting precision She combined with skipper Kirby Short (18) in a half-century opening stand, before the latter was stumped off Amanda Wellington in a rare highlight for the hosts. The dismissal did little to deter from Mooney’s destructive form, as No.3 Laura Wolvaardt simply had to hold up an end as her senior partner’s enterprising knock completed the pursuit in just 16 overs. Earlier, the Strikers’ opening pair of Tammy Beaumont and New Zealand ace Suzie Bates were sent packing inside the first three overs, courtesy of Jonassen (2-20) and the entertaining Sammy-Jo Johnson (1-14). The Queenslanders had set the tone for the contest, as the top order continued to struggle in the face of a fired up bowling contingent intent on redeeming the Brisbane faithful; Dottin leading the way as she tore apart the middle order with figures of 2-13. Her presence was felt with or without the ball in hand, taking a catch off Ferling (1-16) to leave Adelaide limping at 5-49. Some late resilience from Bridget Patterson (32) and Tabatha Saville (31 not out) boosted the total with a partnership of 54, before Jonassen claimed her second victim in Patterson with the final ball of the innings. Ultimately, the counterattack came too late for the Strikers to post a threatening total, the restrictive efforts with the ball and in the field by the Brisbane side laying the foundation for Mooney’s monumental display. Having found their way back into a winning groove, the Heat will resume their campaign full of confidence on December 31, where they will meet the Strikers once again at Adelaide Oval.
