http://premier.qld.cricket.com.au/pageitem.aspx?id=146323&id2=1&eID=12832&entityID=12832 The University of Queensland have picked up where they left off last season’s Kookaburra Limited Overs Competition, defeating Western Suburbs by eight wickets in the first round of the Queensland Premier Cricket Competition at WEP Harris Oval. Reigniting their rivalry that saw the two sides meet in the 50-over and four-day competition deciders, it was Uni who took the early bragging rights in the 2017/18 season with a comprehensive start to the summer. First game skipper Scott Henry was the star of the show, the opening batsman scoring a brilliant unbeaten 102 to comfortably guide his side home. Set 222 for the win, the former New South Wales Blues & QLD Bulls batsman struck 13 boundaries during his stay at the crease including three sixes - the last of which brought up the winning runs. Stuck on 96 with just four runs required, Henry dispatched Wests bowler Paddy Dooley for a maximum to bring up his century and the resounding victory in the 44th over.
Henry’s knock was well supported by Jano Coetzee (64*), with the pair putting on a 149-run partnership to take the match away from the opposition. Earlier Wests elected to bat first and were in a strong position at 1-108 on the back of captain Pat Collins’ half-century. However key wickets at regular intervals kept Uni in the contest and forced the run rate down - Jack Carty keeping the visitors particularly quiet, taking 2-30 from his nine overs. His first breakthrough - the key wicket of 2016 Queensland Bulls debutant Sam Truloff - triggered a semi-collapse of 6-78 to put a halt on their charge for a significant total. Anthony Atkinson up’d the ante late in the innings, his unbeaten 56 from 58 deliveries setting Uni a tricky target heading into the second innings. However that total lost any menace it may have had, Henry kickstarting his innings with three boundaries off just the second over of the run chase. His fast start with 2016/17 Peter Burge Medal winner Michael Philipson (42 from 40 balls) had Wests on the back foot from the outset, before the captain’s match-deciding stand with Coetzee completed the dominant display. University of Queensland 2/224 (S Henry 102* J Coetzee 64*; B Edwards 2/42) defeated Western Suburbs 7/221 (P Collins 60, A Atkinson 56*; J Carty 2-30, D Endersby 2-55)
