TOM Gilbert knows that, at times, he can play a bit like a lunatic. But it is a style the young Cowboy prides himself on, provided he balances his aggression so it does not become a detriment. The 19-year-old’s fearless approach to every tackle or hit-up he takes on has earned him many admirers, as well as the 2019 Intrust Super Cup rookie of the year title. However he has never stopped learning, and it is his quest for perfection that has him hopeful of a maiden North Queensland jersey.

THEY competed against each other as schoolboys. They are vying for the same Cowboys jersey. But the mateship between Mitch Dunn and Shane Wright has remained just that. Lacing up for Proserpine State School as a 15-year-old, Wright recalls how Dunn used to try and get under his skin — never more evident than in a schoolboys final with Mackay’s Mercy College. According to Wright, “Dunny didn’t do too much”. Ask Dunn: “Wrighty dropped the ball three or four times”. Regardless, the relentless jibbing gives away who earned the bragging rights. |
