Queensland Fire and Emergency Services responded to a call about 10.30am on Sunday about a rapidly spreading inferno on Ball St in Eton. But by the time crews arrived, it was too late to save the wooden cabin. Owner Ryan Smith was heartbroken on the scene. This was his dream home, he said. Mr Smith "did not need anything big", but he poured his sweat into turning the cabin into a home.
Now he does not know what comes next. Fortunately no one was in the house at the time. Mr Smith was out feeding the animals on the farm when he heard a bang and looked over. He was confronted by "two-metre flames out the front of the porch". After rushing to call triple-zero, his efforts were not just on salvaging his home but preventing it from becoming a fully fledged wildfire. "I just thought (I would) try to put it out, and try to protect the trees in the background so it doesn't start a bushfire and keep spreading," Mr Smith said. "It wasn't just the house, this could have been many houses. "Probably could have saved it if we were in town, especially being a wood cabin. "But it was too far to save it out here." The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. However, Mr Smith said the home had experienced power outages the previous night and earlier that morning. A firefighter on scene confirmed the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
