Mia McEldowney was diagnosed with a brain tumour in June, flipping the family’s life on its head. She was told she had nine months to live. Six months on, the eight-year-old’s condition has suffered further, and her outlook from a medical standpoint has not changed. But the family has refused to throw in the towel, embracing an unwavering attitude that Mia will be the one to beat this.
“Since Mia has been sick I’ve gotten in touch with so many other (families) who are going through the same thing,” Mrs McEldowney said. “It’s hard because you follow all these journeys but they don’t end how we want Mia’s to end. “Chris and I since the beginning have remained positive Mia is going to be the one to beat it. “That’s what we truly believe – she’s going to be the one that’s going to get that miracle.” For three months a donation page was available to support the family. When it closed in September, about $70,000 was raised. The generosity of the community ensured the family was able to stay financially afloat while Mrs McEldowney and her husband Chris were absent from work. “The support from the community is crazy,” Mrs McEldowney said. “We wanted to do a big thank you for everyone, I know there are lots of people who watch the page, but there’s no way we could thank everyone.” Mia did receive some joy when she got to meet her baby brother, CJ. Her mum said the determined battler was endeared to her younger sibling from the outset and interacted with him whenever possible. After a harrowing 2019, the hope is for a brighter 2020 and more time for the new brother and sister to bond. “You do what needs to be done., I don’t care how hard it is or how long we have to fight with Mia, we’ll do it until we can’t anymore,” Mrs McEldowney said. “She’s going to be the one, and I hope there are others to follow as well.” While the donation page is no longer active, the family can still be supported by reaching out to the Miracles for Mia Facebook page.
