It will be about honouring the dedicated pursuits of those the club have lost. In the past month endeared club legends Robert Armstrong and Ron Edgar passed away, leaving behind a lasting legacy with the Bulls. Club patron Edgar was a “generous supporter of Bulls rugby” and was instrumental in getting the junior teams in the region up and running. Armstrong was the club’s first president and captain-coach, and the first Australian Golden Oldies player. Current Bulls coach Len Knuth was first coached by Armstrong in 1994 and, in the club’s 40th year, said the playing group needed to acknowledge the work achieved by the missed duo. “There’s a lot of new players at the club who need to be aware of the sacrifices they made to get the club running,” Knuth said.
“Last year we went well, we won junior club championships and the seniors made the final, it’s just a shame they won’t be here with us in August to celebrate the 40th anniversary. “The young players need to be aware of the sacrifices people in the past have put together to enable them to take the field 40 years on.” With the 2020 season fast approaching the way the team is shaping is “a bit of an unknown”. Players living in Townsville and Charters Towers respectively have been training as separate groups, a typical issue for the club that Knuth said could make their attack “a little bit clunky”. But the passion the players emit cannot be understated, and that drive earned them a spot in last year’s semi-finals. Despite losing 2019’s Best and Fairest player Joey Cram, who Knuth said has taken the year off to rid himself of niggling injuries, the coach has talent at his disposal to make an impact. The young front row trio of Ronnie Berryman, Kane and Blake Fuller return for the 2020 campaign and Knuth said continuity in the engine room would be crucial to their prospects. “They finished off the season last year playing strongly so we’re looking forward to them combining up front again,” he said. “I think the building block of every forward pack is your front row. “It’s always hard to find good ones, and we have got a fair bit of depth there this year … having depth there is really good.”
