Townsville’s MotoGp star has been largely based in Europe for the past 10 years. But for the first time since establishing himself on the world stage the 25-year-old has been able to spend an extended amount of time at his family’s Gumlow property. Miller was supposed to be in Texas for round three of the 2020 World Championship and preparing for the next stage in Argentina. But the coronavirus pandemic has put all of that on hold for the time being. However with impressive dirt tracks at his disposal, Miller has the tools he needs to stay on form for when the international circuit resumes. “A lot of guys are locked up over in Europe so we get a little bit of an advantage … I’d go stir crazy not being able to ride for so long,” Miller said.
“It’s the longest I’ve been without racing since I was maybe seven years old so it’s definitely strange. “It’s a strange thing to deal with because I’ve always been working towards a race and at the moment we don’t have anything. You’re in limbo. “(But) I’m able to keep on the bike, keep training and take most of the advantage out of this.” A strong 2019 season led Miller to six podium finishes, confident and riding a wave of momentum. His form had him hopeful of securing a move into the factory Ducati team. But with races on the backburner his opportunities to make his case are getting slimmer. Miller’s contract finishes at the end of 2021. However, despite anticipating some drastic changes to the racing calendar, he is determined to keep training and position himself as well as he can to earn selection. “Not having racing means no contracts are getting done and we’re getting further and further through the year. There’s a bit of uncertainty about what 2021 will hold for us,” Miller said. “But no one has signed the contract as of yet that I know of, so there’s still two seats available over there. “We just have to wait and see what they’re going to do with them and how they’re going to go about this 2020 situation.”
