WHEN it comes to realising her Olympic dream, Stephanie Kershaw is luckless. Ever since she was a young, rising hockey star the Townsville product has envisioned the opportunity to challenge for a gold medal — and Tokyo was her latest fuel for motivation. An ACL injury deprived her of any opportunity to play with the Hockeyroos in Brazil, and now coronavirus threatens to prevent her second bid. But despite the distractions and fears across the globe, it is business as usual for the 24-year-old.

A WARNING has been issued to the rest of the Townsville rugby union: Teachers West have never prepared better. Captain Josh Fletcher cannot recall a pre-season as good as the one they have just had in his time at the club. The five-time reigning premiers have developed an insatiable appetite for winning and, according to the fly-half, no one is getting complacent despite their roaring success. While they have lost some experienced heads such as Tom Vinson, several young faces have emerged to take their place and continue the dynasty the club have established. Their quest for a sixth consecutive title begins against their 2019 grand final opponents Lavarack Army Rugby Club. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/morgans-back-and-ready-for-unreal-suncorp-experience/news-story/f56633d0b4714971fb8426637d82e010
FORCED to sit out the entirety of 2019, Blair Morgan is determined to make up for lost time. Multiple injury setbacks have done little to deter his drive to succeed, rather it has fuelled a massive pre-season to do his best by his beloved Brothers and Brolgas. Three successive broken arms wiped Morgan from the field last season in the Townsville and District Rugby Union. Despite his absence, the forward’s standing in the game brought him straight into the Brolgas line up to take on the Sunshine Coast at Suncorp Stadium. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/jake-dorans-pipe-dream-is-headed-for-reality-in-tokyo/news-story/ddd852b08b8f8af30aeeb1b20250a23e
WHAT was once “just a pipe dream” is now a very possible reality for Jake Doran. Training harder than he ever has before, the Townsville sprinter is mapping his path to the Tokyo Olympics. Doran’s memories of watching the stars of the 2008 Beijing Olympics still stand firm, acting as a powerful driving force throughout his sprinting career. Now his own berth, in what he says is “the pinnacle” of sport, is his for the taking. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/townsville-sergeant-defies-injuries-to-captain-invictus-games-side/news-story/9278c00efa183fdc856f9463b56f5b71
IT WILL be the first time Sgt Shane Bramley represents Australia in the Invictus Games. But while honoured to fly his nation’s flag, it is the opportunity to compete in front of his family that serves as motivation to perform. Sgt Bramley’s son, Nathan, has never seen his athletic prowess in action. He has heard stories of “how good he was” but the trip to the Netherlands will put an image to the fanfare. Twenty-four years of military service has taken its toll on the Aitkenvale man, who now lives with fibromyalgia — a widespread, fatigue-inducing and degenerative muscle condition. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/call-for-help-norths-issue-sos-for-more-senior-players/news-story/972fb966f3dd037fc6f3b5592d84ae35
A PLAYER shortage has Norths Devils fighting to remain in the Townsville A-grade rugby league competition. But the club has refused to throw in the towel. As it stands the Devils, who are celebrating the club’s 10th anniversary, are unable to field both an A-grade and reserve grade side. Earlier this week the club took to social media and issued an SOS for players to strengthen their ranks. The TDRL said they will have until round one starts on the last weekend of March to finalise their teams. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/inaugural-marianvixens-coach-returns-to-the-court-in-title-push/news-story/5778bf268a7dd7cdb812417407a5f2d8
IT IS a homecoming that has put Marian-Vixens on a serious premiership charge. Rick Evans, the club’s inaugural coach, has returned with high expectations — to take out the competition. With 22 years of military service under his belt the former sergeant comes with a determined focus to get the best out of each individual who takes the court in the maroon and yellow. Despite being away from the coaches box for so long, it was as though he never left. And according to Evans, his team have adapted to his regimen instantaneously. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/bruised-rib-cartilage-will-not-stop-determined-townsville-all-star/news-story/9167b6ade6670db5dedf05c9c5c476d8
IT HAS been five years in the making. It is the experience he has “been craving”. Finally, Kyle Reynolds has his All Stars. The Townsville Cyclones running back, along with quarterback Boeden Brunne, has been striving to get North Queensland Gridiron included in the national championships since 2015. Now 11 members of the Cyclones 2020 squad will join forces with fellow Australian title outliers Tasmania and the ACT in a combined All Stars representative squad. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/charters-towers-bulls-to-honour-endeared-club-legends-this-season/news-story/588142a598196a1ab7264e6a0d3a0a78
THIS season will mean more than winning games for Charters Towers. It will be about honouring the dedicated pursuits of those the club have lost. In the past month endeared club legends Robert Armstrong and Ron Edgar passed away, leaving behind a lasting legacy with the Bulls. Club patron Edgar was a “generous supporter of Bulls rugby” and was instrumental in getting the junior teams in the region up and running. Armstrong was the club’s first president and captain-coach, and the first Australian Golden Oldies player. Current Bulls coach Len Knuth was first coached by Armstrong in 1994 and, in the club’s 40th year, said the playing group needed to acknowledge the work achieved by the missed duo. https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/sport/local-sport/down-but-not-out-ellie-hampson-tears-into-her-rehabilitation/news-story/8d933bf3bb520396f22f18d3a9539662
A “DISHEARTENING” injury blow has robbed Ellie Hampson of the chance to take part in the Gold Coast Suns’ first AFLW clash. But the Townsville product is far from deterred, rather she is using the setback as the catalyst for an even bigger introduction to the top level. The 18-year-old suffered ligament injuries and bone bruising to her left ankle at a training session last week, which is set to rule her out for four to six weeks. Round one takes place on her birthday, exactly one year on from when she was first selected in the inaugural Suns’ squad. |
