Guided by Charters Towers trainer Julie Russell, the eight-year-old gelding left behind four years without a mantle to claim the Laser Clinics Townsville Benchmark 55 Handicap 1000m. It took a late charge from jockey Matthew Gray to seal the breakthrough result at Cluden Park yesterday, chasing down a rampant Cupid’s Son who seemingly had the race sewn up from the get-go. But he was patient, he waited and he timed his run through the pack to perfection, clocking in at 56.99 seconds in a tight finish. A jubilant Russell admitted Blazon Tales was “sacked a long time ago”, but was brought in educate with the breakers. She gazed fondly at her drought-breaker after the race as he spun in excited circles — soaking in the victory. “I’m so pleased, he doesn’t like being among horses and always runs good sectionals but he just can never win,” Russell said.
“He’s an idiot but I love him.” The day kicked off in fine style for Roy Chillemi, who narrowly missed claiming first and second of the TTC QTIS Two-years-old Handicap 1200m. Higher Realm got the Atherton trainer’s day off to flyer, winning at 1 minute 10.08 seconds. Tennesse Boy had to overcome a slow start after getting “held up pretty badly” but did enough to get on the podium in third place. Jockey Stephen Wilson had work to do atop of the victorious two-year-old gelding, and Chillemi said the win probably should have been two or three lengths better than what transpired. However he said the best horse still won on the day and even greater exploits were in his future. “He over raced if you had a look at one stage and Stephen had to grab him and drag him back,” Chillemi said. “I was actually concerned there, I don’t like to see him getting dragged back but … he set off to speed and had to come around. “He was so green honestly, that horse has got a lot more improvement in him than what you think – he’s an improving horse.” The Chillemi-Wilson combination also took out second with Buoyancy in the Success North Queensland Benchmark 55 Handicap 1000m, finishing behind Townsville trainer Michael Geaney and Kiss the Boss. Dordogne and his Townsville trainer Graham Hughes took out the Otto’s Market Ratings Band 0-65 Handicap 1609m, while Charter’s Towers trainer Robert Kirkwood claimed a win with Lady Carrera in the Pickerings Auto Group Maiden Handicap 1200m.
